Increase in European fuel demand, Q1 2014

Oil

There has been a remarkable improvement in motor fuels consumption so far this year. Road transport fuel demand has accelerated over the last few months, with diesel demand actually growing y-on-y.

This development is more driven by Germany than being a European-wide phenomenon. The improvement in the Continent's biggest economy resulted in higher mileage and also higher trucking activity, increasing diesel consumption during the first quarter of the year by 7.5% vs a year ago. Similarly, German gasoline consumption between January-March grew by 4% y-on-y.
